Cycle count and battery health: check before you ask
Hold the Option key, click the Apple menu, open System Information and go to Power. Cycle Count sits under Battery Information. On recent macOS you can also open System Settings, then Battery, then the info button beside Battery Health.
Most modern MacBooks are rated for around 1,000 charge cycles before the battery is considered consumed, and older models were rated lower. A machine at 200 cycles reading Normal is a different asset from the same model at 900 cycles reading Service Recommended, and the offer reflects that difference honestly.
A tired battery does not disqualify anything. It is a known cost, a cell and an hour of labour, so it comes off the figure rather than ending the conversation. We ask you to check it before messaging because it is the single number that most often moves an offer between the WhatsApp quote and the counter.
Apple silicon or Intel: the value gap is real
The M1 arrived at the end of 2020 and split the MacBook market in two. Everything from M1 onward holds its value stubbornly. Battery life is genuinely better, the machines run cool and quiet, and buyers here ask for them by chip name, M1, M2, M3 or M4, rather than by year of release.
Intel MacBooks still sell, they just sit lower and fall faster. They are at the end of the macOS upgrade road, they get hot under load, and the second-hand market prices both facts in. A late Intel 15-inch or 16-inch Pro is still worth collecting. An early Intel machine with 4GB of memory and a spent battery is closer to a parts unit, and we will say so rather than dress it up.
Configuration matters more here than on almost any other laptop, because memory and storage are soldered to the logic board. Nobody upgrades a MacBook after the fact, so 16GB and 512GB is permanently worth more than 8GB and 256GB of the same model and year. Tell us both when you message; they shift the quote more than colour or a scuff ever will.
Activation Lock, Find My and the account on the machine
Activation Lock is the one thing that stops a sale dead. If Find My is still switched on and the Mac is tied to your Apple Account, the next owner cannot get past the setup screen. We cannot buy a locked machine and no honest buyer can.
On Apple silicon and T2 Macs running macOS Monterey or later, the clean route is System Settings, General, Transfer or Reset, then Erase All Content and Settings. That signs you out and wipes the machine in one pass. On older Intel Macs, sign out of iCloud first, then erase the disk in Recovery and reinstall macOS.
If the machine is already erased and you only then realise the account is still attached, it is fixable from anywhere. Open your Apple Account device list from another device or a browser and remove the Mac from it. Do it before you travel: it wants your password and usually a code sent to a device at home. While you are in there, sign out of iMessage as well.
The condition details we actually check
Screen first. We look for pressure marks, dead pixels and wear in the anti-reflective coating, which shows as cloudy patches where fingers have rubbed it. On some 2016 and 2017 13-inch Pro models we also check for the backlight cable fault that appears as uneven light along the bottom edge before it fails altogether.
Keyboard next. The butterfly years, roughly 2016 to 2019, get typed on key by key, because sticking, repeating and dead keys are common on those boards. Then the body: lid dents, dropped corners, hinge stiffness, a base plate lifting away from a swelling battery, a trackpad sitting proud of the palm rest, bent pins in the ports.
Machines that do not switch on are bought as well. A failed board, a dark display or a case bowed by a swollen cell are repairs with known costs, so the offer carries the repair inside it instead of the deal being refused. If a battery is swelling, stop charging it and bring the machine as it is: routine work for us, a genuine hazard in a bag at home.
None of this is a hunt for reasons to pay less. It is the same list the next buyer runs when we resell the machine.
Trade-in credit or cash: what you actually get
Manufacturer and retailer trade-in schemes pay in credit toward your next purchase. That is useful when the next purchase is already decided. When it is not, credit is a voucher, and a voucher is not money. We pay cash on the spot, or bank transfer when the amount is larger or you want the record. Collect both numbers and choose. Show us a written quote and we will try to beat it.
Credit schemes also flatten condition into two or three bands, which suits a clean mid-range machine and punishes a well-specified one. A 16GB, 1TB Pro with a scuffed lid is often worth noticeably more sold outright than traded against a band. It works the other way too, and we will say so when a band flatters a rough machine.
The route is short. Send the model, year, memory, storage and cycle count with a photo or two, we come back with a figure, and you bring the machine, with your Emirates ID, to the Gold and Diamond Park office and leave paid. Selling several at once and we will collect instead. For model-level detail, the MacBook Pro and MacBook Air pages go deeper than this one.
