What your MacBook Pro configuration is actually worth
A MacBook Pro is not one product. The distance between a base 14-inch M3 with 8GB of unified memory and a 16-inch M3 Max with 48GB and a 2TB SSD is enormous, and a buyer quoting one flat MacBook Pro price is rounding that distance in his own favour. Give us the chip tier, Pro, Max or standard, plus memory, storage and screen size, and your number is built on that exact configuration.
Storage is the lever people underestimate. Apple's upgrade pricing was steep and none of it can be added later, so a 1TB or 2TB machine is its own tier, not a rounding of the base. Colour changes nothing: space black, silver and space grey are one number.

The Intel Touch Bar years, priced honestly
We still buy the Intel machines: the 2016 to 2019 Touch Bar models with the butterfly keyboard, the 2019 16-inch with the scissor keyboard, and the 2020 Intel 13-inch. What we will not do is pretend they are worth Apple silicon money. They run hot, they lose battery life quickly, and demand now comes mainly from people wanting a cheap second machine.
Two faults come up constantly there. Butterfly keyboards develop sticking or repeating keys, and the display cable on earlier units can fail so the backlight cuts out at certain lid angles. Both are quoted for openly, and neither means we turn the laptop away.

Heat, high-wattage charging and a worn battery
A Pro that has spent its life exporting video ages differently from one that has answered email. Sustained load means sustained heat while the battery charges hard, which is why a two-year-old rendering machine can show more wear than a four-year-old one used for documents.
These are high-wattage laptops, and years spent on an underpowered charger leave the battery in a permanent deficit under load. Say so if that is your machine; it explains a reading that looks worse than the laptop deserves. A worn battery is a line item rather than a refusal, and a bigger line on a 16-inch than a 14-inch: the cell is larger, the strip-down longer, and a Service Recommended warning costs more on the big machine.
Repair history counts too: a board reworked outside Apple, a display from an unknown supplier or a kiosk battery swap all change what the next owner is buying. Say so upfront.

Deauthorise your software, then wipe it properly
Pro machines carry licensed software. Release anything tied to this particular Mac before it is erased: a creative suite, an audio plug-in bundle, any app counting activations against a seat. Once the drive is gone, those seats stay attached to a machine you no longer own.
Back up properly rather than hopefully. Scratch disks, media caches and library files often sit outside the folders a quick drag-and-drop picks up, so check where your projects point before anything is erased.
